Why Is My Water Heater Making Strange Noises?

You’re sitting in your living room and you hear it — a pop, a rumble, or a loud bang coming from your garage or utility closet. It’s your water heater, and it’s trying to tell you something. The good news is that noisy water heaters are one of the most common calls we get. The bad news is that ignoring the noise usually makes the problem worse and more expensive to fix.

Here’s what each sound means, what’s causing it, and when it’s time to call a professional for water heater repair.

Popping or Crackling

This is the most common water heater noise, and it’s almost always caused by sediment buildup. Over time, minerals in your water — especially calcium and limestone — settle at the bottom of the tank and harden into a layer of scale. When the burner or heating element fires up, water trapped beneath that sediment layer gets superheated and forces its way through, creating popping or crackling sounds.

In the Treasure Coast area, hard water is a real factor. Homes in Stuart, Port St. Lucie, Jensen Beach, and Palm City tend to have higher mineral content in their water supply, which means sediment builds up faster than in areas with softer water.

If caught early, a professional tank flush can clear the sediment and stop the noise. But if the buildup has been there for years, the sediment may have hardened to the point where flushing won’t fully remove it — and the damage to the tank floor may already be done.

Rumbling

A deep rumbling sound is a step beyond popping. It usually means the sediment layer at the bottom of the tank has become thick enough that large amounts of water are being displaced and churned as the tank heats. Think of it like a pot of water boiling under a layer of sand.

Rumbling often signals that the water heater is working significantly harder than it should be to heat the same amount of water. That means higher energy bills and accelerated wear on the tank. If your water heater is rumbling, it’s worth having it inspected sooner rather than later.

Banging or Knocking

A sharp banging or knocking sound — sometimes called water hammer — is usually not the water heater itself. It’s caused by a sudden change in water pressure in the pipes when a valve closes quickly. You might hear it when a washing machine or dishwasher shuts off a fill valve, and the sound travels through the plumbing to the water heater area.

Water hammer can loosen pipe fittings over time and eventually cause leaks. A plumber can install a water hammer arrestor or adjust your water pressure to eliminate the problem. If you’re hearing this regularly, don’t write it off — it’s worth getting checked.

Hissing or Sizzling

On electric water heaters, a hissing or sizzling sound can mean that the lower heating element is buried in sediment. The element overheats as it tries to push through the buildup, creating a sizzle as moisture hits the superheated surface.

On gas water heaters, a hissing sound could indicate condensation dripping onto the burner. A small amount of condensation is normal — especially when the tank is refilling with cold water — but persistent hissing can point to a leak or a venting issue that needs attention.

Screeching or Whistling

A high-pitched screech or whistle coming from your water heater usually points to a valve that isn’t fully open. Check the temperature and pressure relief valve and the inlet valve on top of the tank. If either is partially closed or failing, water is being forced through a narrow opening at high pressure, creating the sound.

This is typically an easy fix — but it’s not one to ignore. The T&P relief valve is a critical safety component. If it’s malfunctioning, it needs to be replaced by a licensed plumber.

When to Call a Plumber

Not every water heater noise is an emergency, but none of them should be ignored long-term. As a general rule, call a professional if the noise is new and persistent, if it’s getting louder over time, if you’re also noticing other warning signs like rusty water, inconsistent temperature, or leaking, or if your unit is over 10 years old.

A noisy water heater is your system telling you it needs attention. The earlier you address it, the more likely a repair can solve the problem without needing a full replacement.
