5 Signs Your Water Heater Needs to Be Replaced

Your water heater works hard every single day. Between showers, laundry, dishwashing, and handwashing, most homes on the Treasure Coast rely on hot water dozens of times before noon. But water heaters don’t last forever, and the warning signs are easy to miss if you don’t know what to look for.

If you’re noticing any of the problems below, it may be time to call a professional for a water heater repair or replacement. Catching these issues early can save you from a flooded garage, water damage, or an unexpected cold shower.

1. Your Water Heater Is Over 10 Years Old

Most tank-style water heaters are built to last between 8 and 12 years. If yours is approaching or past that range, it’s running on borrowed time — even if it seems to be working fine right now.

You can check the age of your unit by looking at the serial number on the manufacturer’s label, which is usually on the upper portion of the tank. The first two digits often represent the year it was made. If you’re unsure how to read it, our team at Advanced Plumbing can check it during a service call.

In Florida’s humid climate, mineral buildup and heat cycling tend to shorten water heater lifespans compared to cooler, drier states. If your unit is 10 years old or older and you’re experiencing any of the other signs on this list, replacement is almost always the smarter investment over another repair.

2. Rusty or Discolored Hot Water

If the hot water coming out of your faucets has a reddish-brown tint, that usually means corrosion is happening inside the tank. Once rust forms on the interior walls, it’s only a matter of time before the tank develops a leak.

One way to confirm the problem is coming from your water heater and not your pipes is to run only the cold water tap. If the cold water runs clear but the hot water is discolored, the issue is inside the tank itself.

A corroding tank can’t be repaired. If you’re seeing rusty water from your hot water taps, it’s time to start planning for a water heater replacement before the tank fails completely.

3. Strange Noises Coming from the Tank

Popping, rumbling, banging, or crackling sounds coming from your water heater are a clear sign that sediment has built up on the bottom of the tank. Over time, minerals in your water settle and harden at the base, forcing the heating element to work harder and overheat the tank floor.

This sediment buildup does two things: it reduces your water heater’s efficiency (which raises your energy bill) and it accelerates wear on the tank itself. In many cases, the sediment can be flushed out during routine maintenance. But if the tank has gone years without being flushed, the damage may already be done.

If you’re hearing unusual sounds from your water heater, have a licensed plumber inspect it. Our team can tell you whether a flush will solve the problem or whether the unit is past the point of repair. Contact us to schedule an inspection.

4. Inconsistent or Lukewarm Water

If your showers start hot and quickly turn cold, or if the water never seems to get fully hot anymore, the heating element or thermostat inside the tank may be failing.

For electric water heaters, this could mean one or both heating elements need to be replaced. For gas units, it could point to a burner issue or a failing thermocouple. In either case, a professional diagnosis is the first step.

Sometimes a repair is all that’s needed. Other times — especially if the unit is older — the cost of replacing heating elements, thermostats, or gas components adds up quickly, and a full replacement makes more financial sense. Our technicians at Advanced Plumbing will walk you through both options and help you make the right call for your budget.

5. Visible Leaking Around the Tank

Water pooling around the base of your water heater is the most urgent sign on this list. Even a small leak can cause serious water damage to your home, especially if the unit is in an enclosed space, closet, or garage.

Leaks can come from the temperature and pressure relief valve, the drain valve, or the tank itself. If the leak is coming from a valve, it may be repairable. But if the tank body is leaking, the unit needs to be replaced immediately — a cracked or corroded tank cannot be patched.

If you see water around your water heater, don’t wait. Turn off the power supply (breaker for electric, gas valve for gas) and call a licensed plumber right away.

What to Do Next

If any of these signs sound familiar, don’t ignore them. A failing water heater rarely fixes itself, and waiting too long can turn a manageable replacement into an emergency — complete with water damage and a much bigger bill.
